Sally Rooney's net worth has never been published by any official source. Celebrity net worth websites put it somewhere between about $4m and $8m (roughly £3m to £6m), but none of them cites accounts or contracts, so treat those numbers with caution. What we can document is the scale of her sales: more than a million copies of Normal People in the UK alone. And from 14 October 2026, her UK publisher has stopped supplying her books in Britain because, it says, it can no longer pay her UK earnings.

Below is what the sales data shows, how an author like Rooney actually gets paid, and what the withdrawal from the UK market does and does not mean for her income.

Why Sally Rooney's books are leaving UK shops

On Wednesday 14 October, Rooney and her publisher Faber announced that her work would no longer be supplied in the UK "in any format". Faber's statement, reported by The Irish Times, put the problem in money terms:

"Current legislation in the UK has led to circumstances where Faber cannot pass on UK earnings to Sally Rooney for her work. To sell a writer's work and not be able to pass on earnings is an unconscionable situation for a publisher."

The background is her public support for Palestine Action, the direct-action group the UK government proscribed as a terrorist organisation in July 2025. In an Irish Times opinion piece the following month, Rooney said she would keep supporting the group, and she has said she would use proceeds from her novels and TV work to do so, according to the Associated Press. Home Office guidance states that offences including membership of, or inviting support for, a proscribed organisation carry a maximum sentence of 14 years. Rooney said in her statement that the group is not proscribed or otherwise prohibited in the Republic of Ireland, where she lives.

In her own statement, Rooney said that "the fulfilment of contracts to publish my work in the UK could now constitute a serious criminal offence", that the decision was taken "with my full agreement", and that she is "wholly prepared to accept the consequences".

A few practical points for readers:

  • Copies already in shops can still be sold. Faber said stock already in the UK market can sell through and does not need to be returned. Once it is gone, retailers cannot reorder from the publisher, according to IBTimes UK.
  • Ebook editions have been removed. Al Jazeera reported that the ebook editions had been taken off sale in the UK.
  • The government has not banned the books. The withdrawal is a decision by Rooney and Faber, and Faber will keep selling her work in other territories.
  • The legal fight continues. The AP reported that lawyers for Palestine Action will ask the UK Supreme Court to overturn the proscription in November; Novara Media puts the start of the hearing on 4 November.

How many books has Sally Rooney sold?

Rooney, 35, grew up in Castlebar, County Mayo, and studied at Trinity College Dublin. She has published four novels in seven years, all with Faber in the UK and Ireland, and each one has been a bestseller.

NovelPublishedUK sales on record
Conversations with Friends2017More than 500,000 copies (Nielsen BookData Gold award)
Normal People2018More than 1 million copies (Nielsen BookData Platinum award)
Beautiful World, Where Are You2021More than 500,000 copies (Nielsen BookData Gold award)
Intermezzo2024More than 40,000 copies in its first week, No.1 in the Official UK Top 50

The award figures come from the Nielsen BookData Bestseller Awards in January 2024, as reported by The Irish Times. The Intermezzo launch figure is from The Bookseller, using Nielsen BookScan data. Those are UK numbers only. Her novels have been translated into many languages, and Normal People also won the Costa Novel Award and the Irish Book Award in 2018.

How much does Sally Rooney actually earn from her books?

Less than the sales totals suggest. The cover price is split between retailer, publisher and author, and the author's share is usually a small percentage.

In 2020, while the BBC adaptation of Normal People was airing, the Irish Examiner obtained Nielsen BookScan figures showing that her first two novels had generated an estimated €8.37m in book sales across the UK and Ireland. Normal People alone accounted for £4.38m of UK sales at that point. The paper added that authors typically receive around 10% of the net price a publisher gets from retailers, or about 45 cents on an €8.99 paperback.

Rooney's own contract terms have never been made public, and a writer of her standing may well have better terms than the typical rate. Her advances have not been disclosed either. So nobody outside her publishers and agents can turn the sales figures into a reliable income number. And income is not wealth: tax, agents' fees and spending all come off before anything is left to count as net worth.

The TV money

Both early novels were adapted by Element Pictures for the BBC and Hulu: Normal People in 2020 and Conversations with Friends in 2022. Rooney co-wrote the scripts for Normal People. The fees for adaptation rights and writing have not been published, but the Irish Examiner noted she would have profited from those deals. The Normal People series also drove a big second wave of book sales, pushing the novel back to No.1 two years after publication.

What the UK withdrawal means for her income

The UK is the market where Rooney sold her first million copies of a single book, so stepping out of it is a real financial decision. Three things are worth keeping apart:

  • UK earnings and new supplies are affected. Faber says it cannot pass on UK earnings, so it has stopped supplying new stock. How much of her annual income came from the UK has never been disclosed.
  • Other markets carry on. Faber still publishes her in Ireland and will keep selling in other territories, and her books have separate publishers in the US and in translation.
  • There is no timetable to return. Faber has given no date for resuming UK supply, and the outcome of the Supreme Court challenge may shape what happens next.

Rooney has never gone more than three years between novels. As Rolling Stone pointed out, if that pattern holds and Palestine Action remains proscribed in the UK, her next book could be on sale almost everywhere except the country where she first broke through.

The bottom line

Sally Rooney's personal fortune is unknown. The $4m to $8m range on celebrity websites is a guess, not a figure backed by accounts. What the record does show is more than two million UK copies across her first three novels, a No.1 launch for Intermezzo, and two BBC adaptations. As of 14 October 2026, her UK publisher has also stopped supplying her books because it says it cannot pay her what those UK sales would earn.
